The government has scrapped plans to introduce green bin charges

Ellen Tannam

Plans for mandatory minimum pay-by-weight charges for green bin waste have been cancelled by the Government.

The charges were due to come into effect on July 1st, which would involve  an 11c per kg charge for black bin waste, 6c for brown bin waste and 2c for the green bin.

RTÉ report that regional waste authorities and opposition parties such as Sinn Féínn, The Green Party, PBP/AAA and Fíanna Fáil all opposed the charges for the green bin in particular.

They argued that illegal dumping would increase, as people would not be as willing to recycle if the service was no longer free of charge.

The Department of the Environment announced that the minimum charge for green bin waste will be removed from the new rules.
