New research sheds light on counties where homes are energy-inefficient and hard to heat.
The research, set out by BioLPG experts Calor Gas, analysed average winter temperatures in Ireland alongside the proportion of energy-inefficient homes across the country.
The experts used a new Cold Homes Index, where counties were ranked on how difficult it is to keep homes warm, taking into account both outside temperatures and how well homes preserve heat.
The data revealed that Leitrim is, in fact, the coldest county to live in.
Scoring 200 on the Cold Homes Index, Leitrim topped the national rankings.
The county is understood to have one of the lowest average temperatures in the country, alongside one of the highest concentrations of homes in BER bands D to G.
So, not only is Leitrim the coldest county, but it's likely also the least energy efficient.
Now, if you're wondering what the case is for your own county, here are the top 10 coldest and least energy-efficient homes in Ireland:
It's important to point out that most of these counties are in the west and midlands of Ireland, where homes are often older, more rural and where weather conditions are harsher.
On the other end of the spectrum, we can find counties with the most energy-efficient homes, where a smaller proportion of homes are in the D-G bands ratio and where weather conditions are milder during the winter months.
The counties with the lowest Cold Homes Index are:
Chief Commercial Officer at Calor Gas, Oliver Kenny, shared his opinions on the findings, saying: "This data shows that where you live in Ireland can make a huge difference to how warm and comfortable your home feels and how much you’re spending on heating.
"At Calor, we’re committed to helping households, especially in rural areas, access more efficient heating solutions like BioLPG.
"Whether it’s through modern gas systems, renewable-ready setups or offering new connections and a free boiler to ensure they’re energy efficient, we want to ensure no one is left out in the cold.
"While insulation and smart upgrades are important, the energy we choose to heat our homes also matters. Cleaner, renewable-ready options like Calor BioLPG give households the chance to cut costs, improve comfort, and lower their carbon footprint, without compromising on warmth.”
