The Sole Suspect Charged Over Brussels Attacks Has Been Released

Ellen Tannam

The sole suspect arrested in connection with last week’s terrorist attack in Brussels has been released by Belgian Police according to AFP.

“The indications that led to the arrest of Faycal C. were not substantiated by the ongoing inquiry. As a result, the subject has been released by the examining magistrate,” the federal prosecutor’s office said in a statement, without giving further details.

Belgian media had identified the man as Faycal Cheffou who claimed to be a freelance journalist, who had a criminal record that involved drugs and violence but had no terrorist links.

Le Soir newspaper had said Faycal C was identified by a taxi driver who drove the attackers to the airport. Earlier it had quoted police sources as saying it was highly likely Faycal Cheffou was the third man.

However, police today released a statement saying they are still on the hunt for another suspect.

The other two men in the photograph are thought to be dead.
