“Forever with a twinkle in his eye and finding a joke to liven up any room he walked into.”

Tributes are being paid following the death of former RTÉ radio and TV presenter Simon Young.

Simon, whose real name is Thomas Meade, passed away on Sunday.

He started his career in pirate radio in the ’70s, going on to present radio shows on 2FM, as well as various TV shows such as The Beatbox and Dempsey’s Den with Ian Dempsey.

The legendary DJ was originally from Glasnevin, County Dublin, but was living in Washington DC.

Many friends and former colleagues took to social media to express their sadness at his passing.

“Another radio legend has left us. Simon Young, a veteran of Irish radio from the ’70s pirates (radio) through to his years with the national broadcaster passed away today,” wrote RadioWaves FM. “R.I.P. to him and condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.”

“Extremely sad news about Thomas Anthony Meade AKA Simon Young RIP – a naturally deep thinking soul loving funny friend,” Ian Dempsey tweeted.

Derek O’Brien wrote: “He bought much humour into many lives – Simon was a very talented Jock with an exceptional love of dance music. Forever with a twinkle in his eye and finding a joke to liven up any room he walked into. I’ve many wonderful memories of our decade on Ian’s breakfast show on 2FM.

“His kindness to everyone in a business that can at the best of times by ruthless. Rest in Peace Simon, one story comes to mind as I reminisce of time we spent as friends – Simon from an early age, had ambitions to work for the National Broadcast.

“He told me ‘having a relation already in there is a help, yes you need a bit of talent, but look at the RTE guide – there’s the answer’. Simon said it’s a moustache, every DJ in 2FM has a moustache- Simon grew a red moustache and got a job on 2FM.”
