Tributes paid as Sligo woman dies when car crashes into shop

Tragic.

A woman who was killed in a horror crash in Sligo on Tuesday after a car crashed into a storefront has had tributes pouring in.

Marguerite Kilfeather, who was in her 70s, was tragically killed after she was hit by the car as it mounted a footpath on the  Castle Street and Market Street junction at around 4pm.

The mum of four has been described as a woman of “skill and merriment”. She was pronounced dead at the scene when the car lost control, hitting her and another pedestrian before going through a shop window. The injured man was brought to Sligo University Hospital with a suspected broken shoulder.

Marguerite’s funeral notice reads: “The tragic and untimely death has taken place of Marguerite Kilfeather (née Flynn), “Hartland House”, Ballyweelin, Rosses Point, Sligo on April 26th 2022.

“Dearly loved wife of Bryan and cherished mother of Joy, Andrea, Marguerite and Drew. She will be sadly missed and remembered with love by her husband, daughters, son, sister Denise (Birr), daughter-in-law, sons-in-law, adored grandchildren Alexandrea, Killian, Ingrid, Kai, Ethan, Elyse, Evelyn and Bryan, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours, her bridge fraternity and many friends.”

Tributes have been pouring in for her, with one person writing: “Bryan, Drew, Marguerite, Xavier, Ethan and Elyse, we are so sorry to hear of the passing of Wife/Mum. She was such a beautiful lady. Thinking of you all at this difficult time. May she rest in peace x x.”

Another wrote: “Sincere sympathy to Brian and the Kilfeather and Flynn families on the tragic n untimely death of cousin Marguerite. Shock is too mild a word to try n understand what has happened. thank u Marguerite for the lovely memories we shall miss you n the fun you brought us.”

A third said: “Sincere sympathy to Bryan and family and the extended Kilfeather and Flynn families on the tragic passing of Marguerite. We will miss her skill and merriment at the bridge table. May she rest in peace.”

And a fourth said: “We were so shocked to hear of Marguerite untimely death. Our Deepest Sympathies to you Bryan, Joy, Andrea, Marguerite and Drew. Also her sister Denise and extended families. Marguerite was a beautiful lady, always had a smile for everyone and a great eye to detail. She will be sadly missed by all. May her gentle soul rest in peace.”

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward, especially those with dash cam or CCTV footage who were in the Castle Street or Market Street areas between 4pm and 4.15pm on Tuesday.
