The military claim they are now in control.

Despite claims to the contrary from Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, Turkey’s military now claim that they have been successful in their attempts at a coup, and now control the country.

Yıldırım had previously suggested that an attempt from sections of the military to seize power had proved unsuccessful. However the military have released the following statement:

“Turkish Armed Forces have completely taken over the administration of the country to reinstate constitutional order, human rights and freedoms, the rule of law and general security that was damaged.

“All international agreements are still valid. We hope that all of our good relationships with all countries will continue.”

The state broadcaster, TRT, has announced on air that the military have indeed taken over control across the country, and confirmed both martial law and an immediate curfew in the country.

However these reports should be treated with a great deal of scepticism, as military personnel are understood to have occupied the broadcaster’s headquarters in Ankara.
