Musical theatre nerds sit up and rejoice – two of Broadway’s biggest musicals, Wicked and Spring Awakening, are on track to make the leap onto the big screen.

It is believed coming-of-age show Spring Awekening is on a faster track, with the composer Duncan Sheik confirming that he and lyricist Steven Sater are hoping to make the movie this year.

Joseph McGinty, who directed Charlie’s Angels and produced The O.C. is set as director of the adaptation, which will be produced by Tom Hanks’ production company, Playtone.

It looks like it’s still early days for Wicked, with composer Stephen Schwartz confirming they are still in the planning stages.

Fans of Wicked and Spring Awakening, which are both multiple Tony award winners in the 2000s, have been waiting for film adaptations for a number of years now.
