UK Newspaper Apologises for Claim that Katie Taylor is British

Katie Taylor follows in the footsteps of U2, The Rubber Bandits and many more as she is wrongly identified as British by a UK newspaper.

Twitter users saw red today when a UK newspaper described champion Irish boxer Katie Taylor as British.

The Daily Telegraph, commenting ahead of the women’s lightweight Olympic semi-finals today, posed the question; ‘Can anyone beat Britain’s Katie Taylor, the most technically proficient attacking boxer in the world?’

Ah, that answer would be yes. Ireland’s Katie Taylor could most certainly beat the British version, given that the British version was a complete unknown until early this morning…

Twitter users were quick to respond to the gaffe, with the story current the number one trending topic in the country.

It’s unlikely it will bother Taylor this morning though, as the Bray native (that’s Bray in County Wicklow, Ireland, to the confused) will be focused on her 2pm bout. Katie will take on Manzuna Chorieva of Tajikistan today to win a place in the final.

Whatever her placing, Katie is already guaranteed a medal, and will be standing proud on the podium while the Irish flag is raised.  Go on Katie!

UPDATE: The Telegraph Apologises!

After an outcry on Twitter, The Daily Telegraph have used the social networking site to apologise, stating that Katie is Irish… ‘of course’. Of course.
