America is experiencing a polar vortex with temperatures as low as -60F

Jade Hayden

Suddenly, a five day weather warning isn’t all that bad.

It’s pretty cold.

Like, very cold.

Like, about to snow and leave you trapped in our house for five days cold.

That’s how cold it is.

Back home, we’ve been warned to wrap up, stick the heating on, and stock up on as much bread as we can.

And although the thought of some heavy snowfall isn’t all that ideal, spare a thought for the guys over in the US because some of them are about to experience some record breaking cold weather.

The NWS reports that the midwest of the county will be in the grips of a polar vortex today as the weather event spins across the country.

The polar vortex, which usually moves around the North Pole, seems to have gotten a bit lost and is instead spinning around the US, leading to freezing temperatures, icy winds, and frigid air.

In fact, it’ll be so cold in certain parts of the midwest that forecasters are expecting temperatures to drop to -60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Minus. 60.

Absolute nah.

There’s also up to 60cm of snow expected in parts of Illinois and Wisconsin, with Chicago temperatures dropping as low as -50F.

Genuinely harrowing.
