Vicar of Dibley actor Emma Chambers dies aged 53

Actress Emma Chambers, best known for playing Alice Tinker in the Vicar of Dibley, has died aged 53.

A statement from her agent said that Chambers died from natural causes and would be “greatly missed”.

It said: “Emma created a wealth of characters and an immense body of work. She brought laughter and joy to many”.

As well as her role in the classic sitcom, she played the role of Honey in the 1999 Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts comedy Notting Hill.

She also starred in the TV adaptation of Martin Chuzzlewit.

The Doncaster-born actress is survived by her husband, Ian Dunn.

Broadcaster Emma Freud led the tributes to the late actress.

She wrote:

“Our beautiful friend Emma Chambers has died at the age of 53. We’re very very sad.

“She was a great, great comedy performer, and a truly fine actress. And a tender, sweet, funny, unusual, loving human being.”

She played the role of Alice Tinker in The Vicar of Dibley from 1994 to 2007. She also made appearances in four comic relief specials.

For her role on the show, she won the British Comedy Award for Best Actress in 1998.
