Finally!

C’est la Visa.

A Europe-wide issue yesterday caused problems for Irish people when attempting to pay for items or withdrawing money from ATMs using their Visa debit and credit cards.

A statement from the company, released in the early hours of Saturday morning, claims that all payments are processing normally once more. They further clarified that the issues were not a result of any cyberattack.

In the statement, which was posted on Twitter, the company wrote: “Visa has resolved a technical issue, which occurred earlier today in Europe and prevented some consumers from using Visa for payments. The issue, which was quickly identified, was the result of a hardware failure within one of our European systems and is not associated with any unauthorised access or cyberattack.”

The statement went on to say that “Europe’s payment system is now operating at full capacity, and Visa account holders can now use Visa for any of their purchases and at ATMs as they normally would.”

You can read the statement in its entirety below.

The statement followed an apology on social media, which read: “Our goal is to ensure all Visa cards work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Due to a systems failure, we fell well short of this today.”

“We apologise to all our partners & especially to cardholders. We’re currently operating at close to normal levels.”
