Miriam Walsh met the love of her life six years ago.
Their love was real and deep, and she was devastated when she heard her partner had bowel cancer.
Nursing her for the final 18 months of her life, Miriam waited by a hospital bedside, and became a round-the-clock carer.
Miriam’s partner was a woman, and when she died following her difficult battle with cancer, Miriam had a new fight. Just to be able to attend her partner's funeral.
In a Yes Equality event in Galway, Miriam told attendees how she was refused access to see her partner by a nurse because she wasn't family, and told not go to the funeral by her partner's family because 'it would bring shame on the family'.
Miriam hopes by sharing her story, that people will acknowledge that love shouldn’t be defined by gender and that other LGBT community members will get to marry the love of their lives before it’s too late.
