Met Éireann has urged people to be careful today as freezing foggy conditions continue across the country.
Yesterday saw a considerable amount of fog descend across the country as Ireland saw its first bout of freezing temperatures late last week.
Drivers were warned of potentially “dangerous” conditions this morning and leading into the afternoon.
“Icy stretches this morning and some lingering fog patches leading to dangerous driving conditions in some areas,” said Met Éireann.
“Brightening up through the day as the fog slowly lifts with sunny spells developing. Scattered showers will develop over Ulster and along eastern coasts. Cold with afternoon highs of just 1 to 5 degrees, coolest where fog lingers. Light northerly breeze becoming light to moderate northwesterly later.”
There is currently a fog warning in place across Ireland, valid until 1pm today. The status yellow update warned of “dense fog with a risk of freezing fog in places.”
Temperatures are set to reach highs of just 5 degrees, so if you were planning on your daily stroll down the park this evening, you might want to wrap up warm.
Tonight there will be scattered showers over Ulster with some extending inland and becoming wintry over higher ground.
“A moderate, occasionally fresh northwest to north wind will develop and temperatures will fall to be between – 2 and + 2 degrees,” the forecast added. “Frost and icy patches will form with any clear spells, however temperatures will increase through the night in the north of the country where cloud will build.”
This comes after Met Éireann warned last week that snow could fall in some places across the country.
A status yellow snow and ice warning was issued for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo, warning of overnight falls of hail, sleet and snow.
It also warned of icy stretches and accumulations of snow in some areas, which could prove dangerous.
