Weather warning issued for several counties over possible snow

Here's the latest from Met Éireann.

Valid from 10pm on Saturday (21 December) until 9am on Sunday, the alert applies to Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim and Louth.

It reads: "Wintry showers of hail, sleet and snow are possible tonight and for a time Sunday morning.

"Potential Impacts: Difficult travelling conditions, poor visibility and temporary icy patches."

The snow-ice warning comes after 13 counties were hit with Status Yellow wind warnings, some of which are currently in effect.

Met Éireann issued two alerts of this type, with one affecting Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo, while the other impacts Clare, Kerry and Limerick.

The former has taken affect and is set to be valid until 2pm on Sunday.

The other is scheduled to last from 3pm on Saturday until the same time the next day.

Both warnings read: "Sustained strong and gusty westerly winds veering northwesterly coupled with large coastal waves.

"Winds peaking on Saturday night into Sunday morning.

"Potential impacts: Some fallen trees, wave overtopping and/or spray, difficult travelling conditions especially near the coast."

The UK Met Office has also issued a Yellow wind warning for Antrim, Derry, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone which is set to be valid until midnight on Saturday.

As for the weather on Christmas Day, Met Éireann's early forecast reads:

"Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and St. Stephen's Day will all be mostly cloudy and apart from some light rain or drizzle at times it'll be mostly dry. Day time temperatures will reach 11 or 12 degrees with little or no change in temperature through the night."
