‘I woke up under my boss’s desk’ A cautionary Christmas party tale

The ultimate fear.

Niamh Maher

Have you had yours yet?

Ahhhhhh Christmas parties, they strike fear into the hearts of the most professional workers, and most people (perhaps wisely) choose to avoid them at all costs.  It’s the time of year when Tara from accounts will 100% sing Karaoke, when Alan from legal professes his undying love for Sinead, and when Ciara from sales buys 17 rounds of shots for the whole company (names have been changed to protect identities).

We’ve already had ours! *Phew*

On this week’s episode of Girls With Goals, we’re talking about our favourite time of year with all the trimmings. Comedian Joanne McNally and blogger Rosemary McCabe join us on the panel to discuss everything from sh*te Christmas markets to shocking Secret Santa’s.

We’re also dishing out some much-needed tips to get you through the dreaded Christmas party without a Monday morning phone call from HR.

Joanne McNally shares a particularly scary ‘what not to do’ story if you’ve been in the company for 7 days or less.

Ok. We’ve all had some embarrassing office moments, but Joanne’s tale of her first Christmas party with a new company could possibly be the worst one yet. She explained how it all went downhill pretty quick:

“I was there about 7 days before the Christmas party happened, It was a young enough company and it was in the office so I couldn’t really avoid it. I went and I got absolutely locked. I bit some guy in the arm, next thing I knew  I woke up and I was under my boss’s desk. It was about 4 or 5 in the morning and everyone was gone.”

Right, at this point we’d be packing our bags and heading for the hills, but perhaps you could sneak out and deal with this terrifying fear on your own. There’s cause to believe that if nobody noticed you falling asleep under the desk perhaps nobody would know you woke up there alone? No such luck… enter the sensory alarm system:

“I got locked in the office, I stood up and of course the whole alarm system started going off, I had to ring the boss, she had to give me the code then I had to get out some fire escape out the back,”

After an episode like this, you wouldn’t be surprised if she was sent on her way, but Joanne lived to see another Christmas party with the company.

A cautionary tale is right.
