RIP.
A murder investigation is now underway in Offaly after a woman was killed in an attack in Tullamore this afternoon.
Gardaí say that an assault took place at the canal bank at Cappincur at around 4pm this evening.
The body of the woman who is believed to be in her 20s remains at the scene and it will be preserved overnight.
Gardaí have also noted that the State Pathologist and the Garda Technical Bureau have been notified.
A man in his 40s has since been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently being detained at Tullamore Garda Station.
Gardaí are appealing for any information and are asking anyone who was in the Cappincur/Canal walk area of Tullamore before 4pm to contact Tullamore Garda Station on 057-9327600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
