A British woman on holiday in India has been reportedly raped while on the beach after she was offered a massage from a man.

Local media and police have reported that the woman was on a beach in Goa when she was attacked by a man on June 2nd as her husband was present.

A police spokesperson said on Monday that a 32 year old man had been arrested for allegedly raping a woman at the Sweet Lake in North Goa.

The man has been accused of the rape of the woman under the excuse of giving her a massage, with local reports saying he is part of a group that offers illegal massages near the Arambol beach.

The woman is said to have made a formal complaint on Monday after consulting with her family and the British embassy in India, according to the Mirror UK.

Police say the man was arrested within an hour of the complaint being made. The man accused is believed to have previously worked in a school library.

A senior official said: “We have contacted the police station concerned to get his past records. Currently, he is not working as a librarian.”

The accused and the victim were both sent to a hospital last night for a medical examination and he is set to appear before a local court next Monday.

An FCDO Spokesperson said: “We are providing consular support to a British National in Goa”.
