It has been reported that a woman was refused an abortion under the new Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act.
It is believed the woman sought an abortion under the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act, 2013 as she claimed to be suicidal.
According to the Irish Independent, the woman was assessed by a panel of three experts, but a termination was refused by the panel who ruled there was not a threat to both her life and the life of the unborn child. The woman was said to have become deeply distressed and the child was delivered by Caesarean section.
The woman originally rejected the decision by the board, even going on hunger strike, but later agreed for the procedure to be carried out.
The baby was delivered last week, and is understood to be doing well.
The Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act allows terminations to be carried out where there is a threat to the life of the mother.
The guidelines, which came into effect on January 1st also allows abortions where there is a medical consensus that the expectant mother will take her own life over her pregnancy.
