You can get free crepes at Gino’s Gelato tomorrow morning, and we might start queuing right now

Pancake Day is finally here!

As adults, pancakes have become a staple part of our diet: they’re always irresistible when they pop up on a brunch menu. But that doesn’t mean we’ve lost our childhood enthusiasm for Pancake Tuesday – in fact, it’s one of the few childhood traditions that we’re still passionate about observing.

Growing up, Mardi Gras pancakes were always actually French-style crêpes in our house. Thinner than their stacked American sisters – which we didn’t encounter until much later in life – the light-as-air crepes were dished up straight from the pan, then smothered in butter and sugar and doused with lemon. (This was also before we’d heard of the likes of Nutella or maple syrup or could ever imagine putting rashers together with something sweet.)

They were absolutely delicious – and they made a properly big occasion of the final feast before Lent began.

You can enjoy that same taste of childhood tomorrow, February 25, at Gino’s Gelato. The popular store is celebrating Pancake Tuesday by giving away free crêpes to customers. Made the traditional way with a sugar and lemon dressing, the crêpes will be available until 12pm at no charge.

If one is not enough to satisfy your appetite, you can purchase one of Gino’s signature crêpes topped with the likes of crushed Oreos, white chocolate sauce and fresh cream, or Nutella, sliced banana and chopped strawberries for a second course.

Gino’s is an Irish family-owned Irish company, which has pledged to become 100 percent sustainable in 2020. The chain has already swapped 90 percent of its packaging – including crêpe and waffle containers as well as spoons, tubs and cups – for biodegradable alternatives.

There are 17 Gino’s Gelato nationwide as well as 11 stores across Dublin. The free crêpes will be available at all outlets with the exception of Gino’s Liffey Valley.
