A Dublin man who admitted to cheating on his fiancée on a radio phone-in programme has gone back on air to beg her forgiveness.
The caller, who identified himself as “Dave”, and his philandering comments became a worldwide internet sensation.
He rang Niall Boylan’s radio programme on Dublin-based 4FM and admitted to playing away from the mother of his child and his bride-to-be on Wednesday night.
“Dave” blamed a lack of passion for his cheating, but it wasn’t long before a friend of his fiancée recognised his voice and called the show, lambasting his cheating.
Last night, “Dave” returned to radio and asked his partner, who he admitted has since dumped him, to forgive him.
He said: “In case you are listening, I love you... and I’m very, very sorry.”
“I promise I’m never going to do it again,” he vowed.
“I’m not actually that bad of a guy, Niall. I just made some mistakes and everyone makes mistakes and I’m going to learn, and I have learned, from this mistake. And I promise... I’m never going to do it again, and I’m sorry,” he pleaded.
He was a very different man to what he Wednesday night when he told programme host Niall that he felt “innocent” despite having had sexual affairs outside his five-year relationship over the past six months.
"I feel justified,” he said of the lack of sex in his relationship, adding that he “wouldn’t be broadcasting it,” about his affair.
“There’s no way she could find out about it,” he said, adding “it’s her fault, 100 per cent.”
“Are you scared now Dave, you f****** idiot going on the radio...,” “Paula”, “Dave”’s fiancee’s friend shouted at him when she rang in.
Niall Boylan said the clip, which was immediately posted on “YouTube”, Twitter and other social media websites soon became an internet hit.
Dave admitted that it was a mistake for him to go on air to defend comments from controversial Australian sex therapist Dr Laura Schlessinger who said that women who don’t please their partners sexually bear some responsibility for their partners’ infidelity.
He said he “doesn’t know what came over me” when he decided to ring the show and admit to his infidelity with several women.
“I had no intention of revealing what I had been up to,” he said.
After the ill-fated conversation he stayed at his parents’ home for the night and returned to his own home today to find his partner gone, he revealed.
“I’m here on my own and she’s at her Mum’s house,” he said. “It’s all up in the air.”
Did any listeners have any sympathy for him last night?
Nope.
A caller named Fran said: “He’s going to have to really, really grovel if he wants to get that girl back.”
Another caller named Bridget said, “I really don’t feel sorry for him. I’m glad he was caught.”
Meanwhile, programme host Niall Boylan said he thought Dave lost the run of himself on the show.
“I don’t think he planned to admit he was having an affair,” he told The Irish Independent.
“But the amount of people that have rang is unbelievable. It’s one of those moments you don’t expect to hear on radio.”
His producer Mike Hogan said the phone was ringing off the hook yesterday after the segment aired on last night.
“It’s been a crazy day, It’s gone viral online and it’s trending worldwide,” he said.
