‘So, what look are we going for today?’ The number of times we’ve been asked that question by our hairdresser only to have a slight panic and then quickly mumble, ‘Well, you know, I think it just needs a bit of a trim and some shape put back into it, what do you think?’ Cue us sitting back, getting stuck into a stack of out-of-date magazines and smiling at the stylist at appropriate intervals.
It seems like we’re not the only ones who aren't quite sure what to ask for in the salon chair, as a new survey from Clairol nice’n easy has found that a whopping 85 per cent of women (out of 2,000 women surveyed in Ireland and the UK) confessed that they were also in something of a rut when it comes to their hair. However, a third of these women then said they would like to change their look more often. This sounds pretty accurate to us - so what's holding us back?
According to the research 41% of women are too busy at work to break out of their style rut, whilst, 18% of women said having a baby stood in the way of them changing their style. As for the age factor, it turns out that younger women are most likely to be caught in a style rut, with the average age for a style rut begnning at 32.
The most obvious way to transform our locks is of course to change the colour, but the survey also found that the average woman will only have three different hair colours in her lifetime - that's roughly one colour change every 28 years! The top five reasons why women change the shade of their hair might surprise you. Here are those results:
1. Milestone birthday – 19%
2. A new job or promotion – 14%
3. A relationship breakdown – 11%
4. Reunion with friends or family – 8%
5. Getting married – 8%
When asked how shifting their hair colour makes them feel, 43% women said it made them more confident and 27% felt happy and excited. 52% women admitted that when they look good, it helps them feel good too, and this was even higher amongst women aged 55+ where 63% said it made a difference.
Right, that's it, we're getting out the hair colour chart and shaking things up before Christmas!
