Just when we thought we were all grown up and starting to take control of our lives, hair experts have just come along and thrown cold water all over that idea.

According to hairdresser Andrew Barton, people have been washing their hair all wrong for years.

Barton outlined a number of steps to help you get those glossy locks and although we may have already been doing one or two of them, to realize we’ve been missing out on fabulous tresses for so long is a major let-down.

“I’m a great believer in looking after hair as we would our skin,” he told the Mail Online.

“It’s fine to wash your hair daily, you wouldn’t not wash your face every day, but there are some things to consider.

“Women often wash their hair with water which is too hot, thinking it will make hair cleaner,” he explained. “Hot water activates the sebaceous gland which secretes oil and can leave hair greasy soon after washing.

“Use warm, tepid water for ultra clean hair and to extend the life of your blow dry,” he also added saying that you should not use a lot of shampoo either.

“Don’t rub your scalp too vigorously,” he continued explaining that shampoo should be worked through the top section of the hair and when it is rinsed out the ends will be cleaned.

On the other hand, when you are conditioning your hair, Barton states that you should only run conditioner through the ends of your hair.

Other expert tips included shampooing your hair twice, combing your hair in the shower while there is conditioner in and avoid towel drying your hair.

“When drying, avoid rubbing with towels,” said creative colour director at HOB Salons Issie Churcher “This creates friction and damage the cuticle leaving hair dull and lifeless, blot dry instead to prevent damage.”
