How long have you been working in the fashion industry?
I have been working in the business for the last 25 years. I left school in 1988 and worked with my father in C&D Shoes, the family business located at Charlemont Street Dublin 2.
I enjoyed it decided to make the shoe repair business my future. I enjoyed learning the skill and meeting the public.
Why do you think the Louboutin look is such a covetable style for women?
Christian Louboutin shoes are very desirable for women firstly because of their unique red sole. Once you see the red sole you know they are a Louboutin shoe.
Christian Louboutin makes very beautiful shoes and some of the designs are quite edgy, appealing to a wide variety of women. As Christian Louboutin says:“A woman can be sexy, charming, and witty or shy with her shoes".
I also think that many celebrities have also helped to make them very desirable to many women.
Have you any interesting anecdotes from working as a cobbler?
I have had many interesting and amusing stories over the years while working in this business. I regularly get my male customers bringing in their shoes asking me to raise the heel height. They like to keep one step above their partners!
I often get some very personal items like lingerie left in the shoes which can be embarrassing for all concerned but I'm used to it and most see the funny side of it.
I also find that nothing surprises me anymore. My customer base is so varied now than ever before and they are not afraid to tell me all sorts of personal information, it is nice to be respected as a tradesman and an individual.
Do you have any celebrity clients?
We would also have quite a few Irish celebrities, models and TV personalities including Glenda Gilson and Kathryn Thomas dropping in to us. George Hook is another loyal customer.
We have had Gabriel Byrne and Josh Hartnett popping in too and have been sent a lot of work from the Vikings series also.

Our customers come from all walks of life, from the everyday man or lady on the street to some very well know movie actors, politicians, celebrities and professionals.
Everyone wears shoes and when they have a pair or a few pairs that they love, they want them looked after. Working as a cobbler, you're obviously fairly clued in when it comes to beautiful shoes.
Who would you rate as a designer?
Designers design many of these shoes more for occasion wear so they can be very delicate.
Christian Louboutin designs very beautiful shoes but they really do need special care. We have had many brought to us in a very poor state but thankfully we have been able to bring them back to life in most cases and with the signature red sole like new.

Celine, YSL, Jimmy Choo and Gina are brands that produce beautiful and practical shoes and boots.
What made you chose this career?
I was interested in business and always felt I wanted to work for myself. I have certain goals in life and running my own business has helped me to achieve these goals.
I wasn't sure when I left school if I wanted to go into the family business. I saw how hard my father worked as I was growing up. He had 22 shops at one stage so he worked long days. I didn't know if the shoe repair business was for me or if I was cut out for it!
I spent the summer I left school working with my dad and liked the buzz of the shop. Meeting different people every day and then beginning to learn the trade became very enjoyable.

Since taking over the business many years ago I have realised that the business needed to be modernised so I set up a website and Facebook page.
I also realised that the high end market was flourishing and customers needed to be able to bring their shoes to someone who they trusted to repair there prized possessions and who understood that these shoes were expensive and delicate and needed a lot of care while being repaired.
Thankfully, I seem to have earned this trust and have a lot of loyal regular customers.
What does job satisfaction mean for you?
It's a long day and doesn't stop when the doors close in the evening. There is always more work to do on the business end most evenings so I am kept very busy.
I have worked as a shoe repairer for the last 25 years and although it has been challenging at times and the hours are long, it has given me a lot of satisfaction over the years and provided me the opportunity to build up a reputation of excellence in this industry.
