In The Spotlight: We Rate And Slate The Stars At The National Television Awards

While we can appreciate that top high-end designers aren’t bending over backwards to lend their latest collections non A-listers, there were definitely more misses than hits on the red carpet at the NTA’s.

From a distance, a good few of the dresses look promising but up close is a different story and our main issues with the frocks all begin with the letter ‘f’ – fabric, fit and fussiness.

So let’s start with fit. It seems that the soapstar mantra is ‘if in doubt, go for the tightest dress possible’ and last night, nearly all of the attendees gave us an eyeful. From in yer face cleavage to clinging figure hugging styles to Angelina style side slits, some of the worst offenders left very little to the imagination. If you’re going to wear an ill-fitting frock and can’t get it altered, structured underwear is a must to keep everything where it should be!

And, so onto the fabric. Anything synthetic and flimsy looks atrocious under a bright flash but unfortunately that’s what cheap dresses are made from. We say look to your granny for inspiration and invest in a slip or else why not try good quality high-street alternatives? If Kate Middleton can make Reiss and Whistles look red carpet worthy, anyone can.

Our last bugbear from last night’s effort is fussiness. We’re big fans of accessories here at Her.ie and know how tempting it can be to pile on the costume jewels for a big night on the town but sometimes less is more. Lots of busy jewellery, a statement clutch AND showstopper shoes just end up looking tacky, especially when paired with a full-length sparkly number!

But they weren’t all bad – some of the celebs got it spot-on and shone on the red carpet for all the right reasons.

It's just unfortunate that they were few and far between.
