Met Gala 2023: When is it, what’s the theme and who’s going?

Ellen Fitzpatrick

The best day of the year.

The first Monday in May, the biggest event in fashion, of course, it’s none other than the Met Gala.

Once a year, we’re blessed with a night full of outrageous fashion and accessories, all falling under a new theme each year.

This year, the event is set to take place on May 1st and we can be guaranteed it’ll be a night to impress.

The annual celebration of the Costume Institute’s upcoming exhibition is all about the late Karl Lagerfeld, with the official announcement stating the theme as “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”

Following the announcement in September at Paris Fashion Week, it has since been confirmed that the gala will be “in honour of Karl.”

The designer passed away in 2019 at the age of 85 and was one of the biggest and most celebrated designers in history. Heading up some of the biggest brands in the world like Fendi, Chanel and his own label, he was a creative director until his passing.

The exhibition this year is set to pay tribute to the designer as hundreds of his friends and former collaborators as they give their take on his most well known designs and iconic pieces.

Explaining the theme this year, the Met’s curator Andrew Bolton told WWD: “At its heart the exhibition will look at the evolution of Karl’s two dimensional drawings into three dimensional garments. We could not do a traditional retrospective. For one thing, I think Karl would have hated that.

“Even though one of his facets was that he was a historicist, and he would revisit themes in his work, he was always looking to the future in his own work — he hated looking back at the past.”

While it’s difficult to predict how other designers will take on this theme, it’s almost certain that fashion houses like Chloé, Chanel, Fendi, Jean Patou and Balmain will all be interesting to see due to Karl’s history working with them.

It’s likely many of the celebrities attending will wear something vintage and from one of Karl’s previous collections but it’s also likely many designers will want to do their own tribute while maintaining the brand’s own unique style.

So who will we be seeing in attendance this year? We won’t know for sure until the night but one this is certain, Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, Penelope Cruz and Roger Federer will all be there as they are co-hosting the big night.

Anok Yai, Shalom Harlow, Kendall Jenner, Liu Wen, Adut Akech, Natalia Vodianova, Naomi Campbell, Amber Valletta, Gigi Hadid, and Devon Aoki each appeared on the latest cover of American Vogue in a tribute to Lagerfeld as 10 of the models he loved working with – so we can assume each of them will also make an appearance.

The annual live stream is set to be hosted by Emma Chamberlain, LaLa Anthony, Derek Blasberg and Chloe Fineman and will be available to stream on Vogue’s website, as well as on the magazine’s YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter pages.

The live stream is set to start at 11pm on May 1st and you can sign up here to be alerted for when it begins.
