Dublin’s O’Connell Street institution Clery’s has narrowly avoided closure after it went into receivership last night.
One of the last remaining bastions of pre-Celtic Tiger times, the iconic department store had survived a civil war, two world wars and several recessions in between so it would have been heart breaking to see it fall victim to the current economic climate.

The new owners, a Boston based group Gordon Brothers have bought the store and as well as saving nearly 350 jobs, the group’s Chief Executive Frank Morton has also pledged to restore Clerys to its former profitable glory.
"Today's announcement will facilitate Clerys to make a fresh start," said Mr Morton. "We are acutely conscious of and respectful towards its heritage and tradition."
The department store was revamped in 2004
