Prized possessions: The reason why you can’t let go of that dress

Her

Brought to you by Comfort Intense.

We all have one.

That one piece of clothing that you just can’t say goodbye to no matter how hard you try. It’s usually tucked away somewhere at the back of your wardrobe and chances are that it is something that has a lot of sentimental value or reminds you of a certain time in your life.

It could be a pair of shoes that always give you a little bit of oomph or the old handbag that your granny always used on Sundays. Just because it is no longer in style doesn’t mean that you don’t still absolutely love it.

Here are the Her teams’ most prized possessions.

Gillian Fitzpatrick, Editor.

”Ten years ago this year, I graduated from DIT with my Masters in Journalism. It was a pretty big milestone; for one, my life as a student was officially over and real, proper adulthood awaited.

Another big milestone was the graduation ceremony: held in St Patrick’s Cathedral, there are surely fewer grander locations in the city for such an occasion. And a grand location calls for grand attire (or at least something which looks nice, doesn’t itch, and flatters).

I eventually found this purple, floaty, knee length 1950s-inspired dress in Monsoon. It was a bit pricey at the time (around €180, I think) but I’ve since gone on to wear it to half a dozen (at least!) weddings, as well as days-at-the-races, launches, and a whole host of other fancy-pants dinners and soirees.

I still love it… the purple hue; the shape; the fact that it always attracts compliments despite it being a decade old. Will it still be there in my wardrobe in another ten years? I certainly hope so…”

“So, I didn’t buy this top, I found it in a Fraternity house in Berkeley, California in 2007 after a good oul ‘shin-dig’. It’s pretty gross at this stage and it’s shrunk in the wash but still massive on me. I wear it in bed and call it my ‘apartment’ top. My Mother and friends have forbidden me to wear it in public, which makes me love it even more, it reminds me of being 20 and I don’t think I’ll EVER throw it away.”

Cathy Donohue, Fashion and Beauty Editor.

”Awh, this dress and I go way back. Bought in Warehouse on one of the days I was meant to be doing a college assignment but instead decided I deserved a treat in the form of retail therapy. I thought I was great altogether as it was a ‘silk’ fabric and as for the tye-dye effect, let’s say no more. However, it reminds me of fun summer times, a holiday in Crete, nights out with the girls, and it even worked as a transitional piece by adding tights. It’s somewhere at the back of the wardrobe now and one I never wear but I just can’t bin it, purely for the memories.”

Laura Holland, Entertainment Editor.

”The one item I don’t think I will ever be able to part with is my debs dress. I’ve had it for over 10 years now and I see it sitting in my wardrobe for ten more.

I remember looking for ages for the perfect debs dress and eventually settling on this one because it reminded me of a dress Victoria Beckham once wore with a lace-up design running up the side of it.

I got two more wears out of the dress, between other balls and my two sisters also got to wear it so we got a lot of mileage from the one dress.”

”The one piece of clothing that I will never part with has to be the 1984 vintage jumper that my mum wore on her first date with my dad.

I remember I found the jumper tucked away in the back of mum’s wardrobe when I was 16 and I couldn’t believe my luck when she let me borrow it. Needless to say, I became obsessed and wore it nearly every weekend with bright red lipstick.

Mum and dad have been together for 33 years now. Through two kids, two different houses, some trying times and a million happy ones. Somehow the jumper has survived all this time and it will always be a reminder of where they started out.

P.S. And it still fits her today.”
