Although the reason might surprise you, this particular theory comes from royal etiquette expert Myka Meier so we're inclined to believe it.
Speaking to Good Housekeeping US previously, Myka explained that:
"When the Duchess is at an event, she holds her bag in front of her in both hands when shaking hands might be awkward".
If carrying a clutch bag, we often tuck it under one arm out of the way (they can get very annoying) but this isn't something Kate Middleton always does and instead, she will "place it in one hand to have the other one free".
Placing it on the ground or under the table is also frowned upon with Myka advising that it's placed on a stool or between your back and the back of the chair.
Etiquette consultant William Hanson gave his opinion on the subject to Mail Online too:
"The Duchess of Cambridge may well prefer not to shake hands with certain people - but there are other ways to achieve this, as used by The Queen and other members of the royal family, than opting for a clutch over a bag with a strap".However, he says that a clutch is not always necessary and so Kate can just smile instead.
"A courteous smile at those whom she does not have time to shake hands with will suffice".
