We usually see the Queen in the same outfits. She wears a dress and matching coat. She wears a hat… and she wears white gloves.
You will rarely see a picture of Queen Lizzie without a pair of white gloves on her hands.
Well, the woman behind the gloves for the past 70 years is Genevieve James of Cornelia James, and she recently spoke to Good Housekeeping about the little fashion detail.
“The Queen wears gloves because they’ve always been part of her style. The mind’s eye picture of the Queen is the white-gloved hand waving.
“They’re number one: style. Number two: practical,” Genevieve added.
“They’re necessary because if you’re the Queen, you’re shaking a lot of hands, so they protect her hands as well.”
She also revealed that the Queen prefers a pure cotton glove with an elegant suede-brushed finish or an even lighter Swiss jersey.
The end of her gloves always end just under the sleeves of her coats, which never expose her arms.
