Slingback shoes are the only thing you need in your collection this summer

Ellen Fitzpatrick

The shoe of the moment.

If there’s one shoe perfect for most occasions this summer, it’s a slingback.

Whether it’s a summer wedding for dinner and drinks, slingback heels are back in style and they fit almost any look.

The high street has picked up on the trend following the Resort 2022 show for Gucci by Alessandro Michele, and there isn’t a store you can pass without finding a pair of these.

The shoes were originally designed by Tom Ford in the late 90s and early 2000s, and with that trend coming back stronger than ever, this is one piece you need in your collection.

Not only are these a trip back in time, they have comfort, stability and a showstopping element, and any high street store selling them gives off a luxury feel on their take of the OG Ford-era classics.

Dua Lipa, Dakota Johnson and Sienna Miller have all been muses for these shoes, with Saint Laurent bringing out their own patent and PVC versions while Prada designed a more sporty and colourful version to Gucci’s sparkled and bedazzled shoe.

Miu Miu offers a more structured take with a uniform look to them while The Attico and The Row have a dancefloor and retro feel to theirs.

These shoes have a place in fashion history, with Chanel releasing the Cinderella Slipper in 1957, marking it the “height of elegance” to be seen in a pair of these, and they’ve proven to be timeless.

While designers across the globe have recognised that this trend is one that’s here to stay, the high street is catching on too. Stradivarius’ version is similar to the Prada take while Zara have gone for the colourful angle as did  The Attico and The Row.

ASOS Design has the Gucci feel with sparkles while also going with the structured feel of Miu Miu and the PVC standout that YSL are known for.

Due to the typical low heel on these, they’re easy to walk in, and can be worn for the entire night without that burning feeling higher heels give (trust me, I’ve tested this one out).

With every colour, texture, print and design imaginable available right now, how much you spend on these is up to you. You can splash out hundreds for the real deal or grab a pair for €30, the options are endless.
