Swot Up On Style – A-Z Of Fashion

All about T.

Cathy Donohue

You could study style for years, and still have scope to learn more.

It’s an interesting topic that doesn’t always get the love it deserves, with some dismissing it as frivolous.

We wear clothes everyday (although a duvet day now and then is compulsory), and wearing something you love can often change your mood.

In homage to the dynasty that is style, this A-Z guide will bring you a little insider information on one of our favourite subjects, this week concentrating on all things T.

Ted Baker

Ted Baker began when managing director, Ray Kelvin started his first store in Glasgow in March, 1988. Ted Baker Woman was launched in 1995 and as well as having stand-alone stores, the brand is also sold in larger department stores including House of Fraser and John Lewis. It now operates in several countries including Britain, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Norway, Greece, Spain, Netherlands and Belgium.

Topshop

High street shop Topshop has a huge following and it’s no surprise considering the large range of swoon worthy style on offer. Clothes, shoes, make-up and accessories, we find it difficult to control ourselves in this shopping paradise! The current CEO of Topshop is Katie Foster and it’s part of the Arcadia Group controlled by Sir Philip Green. it also inlcudes Burton, Dorotjy Perkins and Miss Selfridge. The Topshop story began in 1964 when it was opened under Peter’s Robinson Top Shop, a youth fashion brand which is now defunct. The first stand alone Topshop store was opened in 1970. Today it has stores in 370 countries, and of course a vast online customer base.

Thakoon

Thakoon Panichgul is know for his love of playing with pattern almost as much as his devotion to floral prints. He started work as a fashion writer for Harper’s Bazaar in 2000 and the following year, he began a course of night classes at Parsons School for Design in New York. In 2004, he debuted his first fashion line at New York Fashion Week. He financed this brave career move with money he had been saving for a deposit on an apartment. The modernity of his designs were highly regarded by the fashion elite with The New York Times praising him for “steering clear of clichés”.

Tom Ford

This fashion designer talked his way into his first job without any experience. He made his name when he took command of fashion house Gucci, ensuring he became a noteworthy figure in the fashion world. Ford showed his last collection for Gucci in 2004 and in 2005, he set up Tom Ford International. The company began by selling make-up, fragrances and eyewear but there was no sign of fashion. That changed in 2006 when he launched a menswear line and in 2010, it was time for his return to womenswear. The presentation at his flagship Madison Avenue store was attended by Beyoncé and Julianne Moore among other famous faces. Cathy Horyn of The New York Times described the collection as “the height of glamour”.
