Fashion house Rochas showed wide-shouldered suits for women in 1931, pioneering a new and exciting style.
Pantsuits began to make a mark on style when designer André Courrèges introduced long trousers for women as a fashion item in the late 1960s.
Yves Saint Laurent introduced 'le smoking', a tuxedo style suit for females, in 1966 and although women would later favour easy separates as opposed to the formal cigarette pant style, the tuxedo is still the ultimate in chic suiting.
Women's Dress For Success hit bookshelves in 1977 which coincided with designer Thierry Mugler showing suits with a focus on power shoulders.
In 1983, Vogue featured suits from Donna Karan and Ralph Lauren and in July of that year, the publication focused on suits with longer jackets and pants, instead of skirts.
Today, trousers are worn for both work purposes and in keeping with fashion trends.
A patterned blouse paired with tailored cigarette pants is a stylish look and Angelina Jolie proved just how cool the female tuxedo is, when she wore a suit to the BAFTAs.
