Eir customers warned about email scam aiming to steal credit card information

An email has been sent to a large number of inboxes which claims to be from mobile and broadband company Eir. The email asks people to update their credit card information within 24 hours or they are risking losing the service. The email is said to be badly spelt and appear to be from an account based in the US (although those responsible could be from anywhere in the world). Once the scammers have your card details they are likely to take money from the victim’s account. They are then likely to use the transfer money from your account and use it on eBay or for flights. “A lot of people are alert to this kind of crime, but young or old you can be caught out'' Urban Schrott, Cybercrime Analyst at ESET Ireland told the Mirror. “Whether they target 1 million, 2 million or 10 million, if it scams 5% of those then they profit.” Eir acknowleged the scam on their website stating: ''eir are aware of a series of phone calls and email campaigns targeting members of the public.''
