Facebook Messenger is going to introduce autoplay video ads and we are not happy

Ah, what?

Facebook Messenger is grand.

Like, it’s grand. You chat to your mates, you send a few pics, you take approximately 76 screenshots… gets the job done like.

Now, however, it seems like it may be slightly more difficult to get the job done and roast some lads in the group chat because Facebook Messenger are about to introduce autoplay ads in the middle of all your chats and it’s probably going to wreck our heads.

According to Recode, Facebook is planning to introduce the video ads on a trial basis to see how they go. They’ll pop up among messages with your friends as the static ads already do in Messenger.

Except they’ll move. Because video.

Stefanos Loukakos, who runs Messenger’s ad business, has said that user experience is their top priority.

He said:

“So we don’t know yet (if they’ll work). However, signs until now, when we tested basic ads, didn’t show any changes with how people used the platform or how many messages they send.”

“Video might be a bit different, but we don’t believe so.”

We’ll see, man.

We’ll see.

Facebook Messenger started rolling out their video ads this week, so if you see any showing up between the message from your mam asking what you want for dinner and that guy asking if you’re single again, you know why.
