This eejit’s status about Pokemon GO got him fired

Cassie Delaney

Pokemon GO has taken over the Internet.

And while you can’t *officially* download it in Ireland yet, plenty have figured out hacks to use it.

Our own Ciara Knight sauntered around Dublin yesterday giving a preview of what you can expect to see.

It’s a lot of fun.

For one eejit in Singapore though, the desire to wander around catching Pokemon, has actually cost him his livelihood.

Sonny Truyen, originally from Australia was hired by property letting agency 99.co as their SEO specialist.

Obviously intrigued by the worldwide fascination with Pokemon GO, Truyen was peeved by the lack of Pokemon in Singapore. Taking to Facebook, as every decent SEO specialist shouldn’t, Truyen ripped into Singapore.

He shared a status reading:

“You can’t catch Pokemon in this piece of fucking shit country.”

Had he left it there he might have gotten away with it, but worryingly, the online guru continued to insult commenters and Singapore natives.

The status was so offensive that locals shared screenshots to the company’s Facebook page, forcing them to respond and ultimately terminate Truyen’s contract.

In the statement, CEO Darius also calls for an end to hateful language. He writes:

I care about my country, which is why even at the risk of provoking more anger, I ask for your assistance in not propagating messages of hate and division, but instead embrace our diversity.

Insulting behaviour is not acceptable regardless of whether it came from a foreign person or from a local. And the truth is, everyone of us have our best and worst moments. It is a conscious choice we should all be making to focus on the positive.

At least Truyen can probably catch Pokemon in Australia. Looks like he’ll have all the time in the world now.
