Cork woman shares hotel’s thoughtful gesture to celebrate her wedding 46 years later

Keeley Ryan

This is so sweet.

A Cork woman has revealed the thoughtful gesture a hotel made as she was reunited with two other brides who held their wedding reception at the same venue 46 years ago.

Earlier this year, the Metropole Hotel in Cork put out a call to couples who had their wedding reception at the venue over the last 50 years.

They wanted the couples to join their new Wedding Club to celebrate the fact that they had chosen the venue.

And among the couples joining in the celebrations when the club launches on Friday are Eddie and Jean Barrett, who reunited with Don and Breda O’Neill, as well as Tom and Sheila Fitzgerald – with all three couples having held their wedding at the venue on the same day 46 years ago.

Jean told Her about her favourite moment from their wedding day, the hotel’s thoughtful gesture during their 2019 reunion, and what she thinks is the secret to a long and happy marriage.

Reflecting on what it was like for all three couples to be back together again, Jean said:

“It was lovely, we had a great day – just chatted away about everything; the Metropole were very good to us.”

She also revealed that the hotel had thoughtfully recreated their bouquets from their wedding day 46 years ago – and how she used it to pay tribute to her mum.

She recalled how one of her favourite memories from her wedding day involved being able to bring her wedding bouquet to her mum, who had been hospitalised and was unable to make the wedding.

She said:

“My mam was in hospital; she had had a severe stroke and obviously couldn’t make the wedding. So what I did – and it sounds small, but it meant a lot to me – was I took my bouquet up to her in the hospital.

“The wedding went fine and all that, but [bringing the bouquet to her] is one of my favourite memories.

“And when we reunited at the hotel, they recreated the [original] photograph – and they recreate the bouquets, too. So I brought that bouquet out to my mam’s grave.

“I thought it was the most thoughtful thing to do with it.”

Jean and Eddie also shared what they reckon is the secret to a long and happy marriage – and it all comes down to one thing: love.

Jean said:

“It’s all about love. Through all the ups and downs, just making sure you’re there for each other.

“We kill each other, love each other – but couldn’t be without each other.”
