Given the dangers of driving while under the influence, to yourself as well as other drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians on the road, the penalty for motorists found to have drugs or alcohol in their system is severe. In Ireland, drink/drug drivers are automatically disqualified from driving from 6 months up to 4 years.
Repeat offenders can find their disqualification period span anywhere between 4 and 6 years, and even face a €5,000 fine, or 6 months in prison.
After years of taking lessons, studying for your theory and practical test, receiving your driving license is a super rewarding feeling. From planning road trips with friends to everyday life, being able to drive can make a huge difference. Naturally, you won't want to give up that hard-earned driving licence for anything, which is why you should never partake in drink/drug driving, as the consequences are serious.
Even if you consider yourself a safe driver, it's imperative to educate anyone in your life who might drive while drunk or under the influence of drugs of the dangers and consequences, whether that be a partner, a friend, or a family member.
There's nothing cool about it and you are keeping yourself and other road users safe by never getting behind the wheel whilst intoxicated.
Get caught drink or drug driving and you will be disqualified.
