Wrinkles, who needs them?

While getting older is inevitable, we still hate the thought of getting those pesky little telltale wrinkles around our eyes and mouths.

Unfortunately, they are a fact of life, but there are a few things you can do to help fend off the creases without reaching for the botox.

Here are five skincare tips that will help you nip wrinkles in the bud.

1. Don’t over wash your face

Obviously, you need to wash your face to stay clean and avoid oil buildups that lead to spots, however over washing your face can lead to wrinkles.

Dr. Mona Gohara, associate clinical professor of dermatology at the Yale School of Medicine states that excessively washing your face causes your skin to lose essential moisture.

In an interview with Good Housekeeping she states that “When people use harsh soap in order to get a squeaky clean feel, they strip their skin of its natural oils and accentuate fine lines.”

Who would have thought that cleaning our face could be bad for it? Not us.

Step away from the cigarettes

They’re not only bad for your lungs, cigarettes are also a huge contributing factor to skin aging. The nicotine in cigarettes causes the blood vessels to narrow, restricting the blood and oxygen that is delivered to your skin.

The chemicals in tobacco also damage the collagen and elastin in the skin leading to sagging and wrinkles.

Stay away from the sun

The sun is one of the biggest causes of premature wrinkles.

UV rays which are in sunlight depress the natural antioxidants in the skin which leads to wrinkles. Ultraviolet light also damages your genetic material (DNA) every time you are in the sun which causes the skin to lost its elasticity.

At the very least you should be wearing an SPF on your face every day (yes even in winter).

Get those zzz’s

A good sleep can do wonders for wrinkles and help to keep your skin looking dewy and refreshed. But apparently getting a decent sleep is not enough to keep wrinkles at bay. A lot of experts are now looking at the best ways to sleep to avoid wrinkles.

American esthetician  Renee Rouleau recommends sleeping on your back to prevent creases along your face. Waking up with pillow lines on our face is normal but over time our skin loses its ability to bounce back in the mornings.

Some people also choose to sleep on silk sheets so that they do not mark their faces with their pillows.

 Use a good serum

Keeping your skin well moisturised is an absolute must to help fight off wrinkles. When your skin is full of moisture the cells become plump and full, lessening the look of wrinkles.

Drinking lots of water throughout the day will help with this . It’s also a good idea to invest in a good non-toxic moisturiser or serum that replenishes your skin.
