8 of the hottest make-up trends to try this festive season

Katy Brennan

Is there anything better than getting glammed up at Christmas?

There’s a lot of reasons why we love the this time of year. From getting to open a bunch of gifts, to spending time with loved ones, to basking in the magical aura – and there’s plenty of excuse to turn a few looks.

It’s time to take out the glittery palettes and dark lipsticks and explore a few more dramatic make-up looks than usual, because the festive season is almost upon us.

There are a lot of looks we’ve spotted that we are dying to try out this year, so we’ve put together a few of our faves.

1. Frosty Corners

Embrace your inner Princess Elsa by applying a light blue or silver eyeshadow the the inner corners of your eyes. It tends to look best if you keep the rest of your make-up light and subtle, so it can really pop. And as a bonus, it also brightens up your eyes.

2. Reverse cat eye

This upside down version of the classic cat eye has blown up on TikTok recently and it’s not hard to see why. It’s exactly what it sounds like – an upside-down version of the traditional winged look, bringing all the attention to your lower lash line. Using a black liner, line the waterline, and really go down into the inner corner. Then wing it out and up on the outer corner.

3. Monochromatic make-up

Monochromatic make-up means keeping a similar colour palette for your overall look. So the same for your lips, eyes, and cheeks. Try a peachy lip colour, a touch of blush, and sparkly peachy-nude eyeshadow.

4. Colourful smoky eye

Stepping out of neutral tones may seem a little intimidating to some, but it’s easy to get bored of the usual black and brown smokey eye. Switching up the colours to something bold and bright can really kick that sultry sexy look up a notch. Blue colours are always hot this time of year, but purple is also having its moment.

5. Candy cane eyeliner.

Because, why not? You’ll need liquid white liner and a high pigment red as well as a pair of false lashes to rock this look, and pair it with a red lip. ‘Tis the season!

6. Golden glow

With this glowy look, you’ll be the walking definition of golden hour. We instinctually go for cooler tones this time of year, but golden tones are always glam. Use a shimmery gold shades all over your eyes before bronzing it up and highlight like a pro. Complete the look with a subtle pink nude lip.

7. Glitter wings

This glitter winged eyeliner look is stunning and a lot easier to achieve than it may look. Apply some glitter glue to your eyelid as a base and use a piece of tape to mark the shape and and edge. Then dab your loose glitter on and remove the tape. Alternatively, an easier method is to invest in some glitter liquid eyeliner and draw your wing as usual.

8.  Burgundy lip

Yes, we all love a classic red lip at Christmas but why not switch it up a bit this year?  Ditch your default red for a darker shade to stand out this season.
