A viral Facebook rant proves women’s clothes sizes have been shockingly reduced

Have you ever noticed that a size 10 in one shop will be a snug fit while in another you’d struggle to get it over your knees?

Well don’t worry, it’s not you piling on the pounds, but rather a terrifying inconsistency in clothes sizing.

One Facebook user has pointed this out in a post that has now been shared over 75,000 times.

User Missy Rogers from New Jersey explained that she was in American Eagle and picked up a pair of shorts in a similar style to ones she usually wore.

“My first impression when going into the store and trying on the size 4 (as I had in the past) was disheartening as I could not even get them past my knees. Having to go up to a size 10 made me question just how much weight I gained, but once I brought the shorts home and compared, I realised that size is literally just a number” she writes.

Comparing the new size 10 to the old size 4, Missy realised the waistlines were actually identical.

“As the photo shows, they both have the same waistline and width. The only difference is the year I bought them, length, and slightly different style. How is it that what was considered at size 4 is now the same dimensions of a size 10? How small has a size 4 become?” she said.

Missy continued not to shame American Eagle but to make younger girls aware that size really is just a number.

“I do worry about the message younger girls have with media promoting “the perfect skinny body”. They have been convinced that the smaller size you are, the more beautiful you are. This is not the case, and I think it’s important to show that clothing size should not define your beauty. If a size 10 is what a size 4 use to be, what message are you implying to younger girls?”

“In women’s clothing, you can be a size 0 in one store and a size 12 in another,”  she said.
