Foilyage is the new take on balayage aimed at brunettes

Foliyage is fabulous.

Although hair trends had appeared to slow down for a while, they are back with a bang this week.

Rose gold came first, followed by nude hair and now we have foilyage, a new take on balayage.

The idea behind foilyage is that it combines understated balayage with the intense colour that comes from using foils.

Fox & Jane salon owner, Laurean Cairns, spoke to Allure about the trend and explained that “foilyage is a technique where the color is painted on the hair, just like balayage, but then each painted section is wrapped in foils. This amplifies the effect”.

What sets foilyage apart from balayage is the fact that it works well for darker hair because the foils allow for a more dramatic look.

With balayage, hair dye generally only makes contact with one side of the hair which achieves a subtle look, ideal for those with lighter hair, not so much for brunettes.

However, if you want sunkissed ends but your hair is a deep brown/black, then foilyage is the best technique.

Using foils allows the colour to reach more of your hair, not just one side, which allows for a stronger look.

Like balayage, it looks good as it grows out, so you don’t have to worry too much about getting it redone every six weeks.
