It is time to put those feet up...

The majority of you have spent the festive season run off your feet and with the New Year finally here it is time to put your feet up and give them the care they really need.

From the shopping to the dancing, (and not to mention the standing in queues), the Christmas holidays has no doubt left your feet a little worse for wear and so we decided to share with you a few easy ways to show your feet some much needed TLC.

Here are tips to ensure you start 2015 off on the right (perfectly pedicured) foot.

For a homemade pedicure you will need just a few items:

  • A basin filled with warm water
  • A pumice stone/foot file
  • Moisturising cream
  • Emery board and nail polish

Scrub and rub:
Soak your feet for 10-15 minutes in a warm water (bubble bath or soap can be added if you wish – for best results add a handful of epsom salts).

Using a clean towel dry off soles throughly before using a pumice stone/foot file to remove dry or loose skin.

When this is done relax into a comfy chair and prepare to give yourself a foot massage. Place one leg crossed over the top of the other so that the sole of your foot is facing you.

Grab a moisturising cream and you are ready to begin the massaging – According to Sarah Stacey and Josephine Fairley, authors of The Ultimate Natural Beauty Bible, the top two products for your feet are Liz Earle Foot Scrub and Dr. Organic’s Virgin Olive Oil Foot and Heel Cream.

Using your thumbs as your massaging tools, massage from the bottom of your heel in a circular motion. Concentrate kneading on one small area at a time, gradually working your way up to your toes.

Knot impressed – just like your back, feet too can fall victim to knots and areas that feel ‘crystallised’, which according to reflexologists can directly relate to stress and anxiety. Rub until this part of the foot feels soft and supple.

Don’t forget about the toes, they too need their bit of TLC. Turn your foot right-side up and gently massage with thumbs. Pull each toe and wiggle it from side-to-side.

Finish off by massaging your ankles and calves.

Polish it off

Now all you have left to do is a file and paint! Take your emery board and file your nails down (always use one stroke motion – filing over and back can cause damage the nail).

Select your favourite colour and it is time to get to work with the nail polish. Remember always to use a base and top coat to get the best results.
