Women are sharing pictures of their saggy boobs on social media – and here’s why

Trine Jensen-Burke

saggy boobs

Saggy boobs are totally natural and normal, so let’s embrace them.

Half the world’s population have breasts. And just like we are all unique in so many different ways, so are our boobs.

And never mind just being different in shape and size from the outset, life experiences like pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight gain, weight loss, illness etc can all contribute to our boobs changing significantly over time.

I have always had an ambivalent relationship with my own boobs – which are definitively on the bigger side. On one side, I hate that there are so many things I feel doesn’t look right on me with my big boobs – and button-up shirts or dresses always gape. On the other side, my boobs have fed and comforted two babies for a full year each time – and – of I may say so myself – they sure do look great in low-cut tops or a swimsuit.

What I do love, however, is how us women are slowly, but surely learning to become more body positive – even about the parts of our bodies we might not have loved initially.

And this is exactly what London-based style blogger Chidera Eggerue is doing  – helping us feel like we should embrace our wonderful, beautiful boobs – even if they are saggy – which, of course, is perfectly normal.

@theslumflower is using her Instagram to encourage women to appreciate their bodies, especially when it comes to their unique set of breasts.

Since 2019, Eggerue has been sharing photos of herself wearing fashion-forward outfits using the hashtag #saggyboobsmatter.

Speaking to Shape magazine, Eggerue explains how she started the campaign after realizing that there aren’t many pictures of “real” breasts in the media.

“When you see cleavage-baring one-pieces or deep V-neck gowns on the red carpet, the boobs of the women wearing them are usually perky, round, and full — you rarely see very saggy boobs. But it’s natural for women to have naturally saggy boobs or develop some sag in their breasts as they age or after having kids and breastfeeding.”

The style blogger’s social media is full of captions encouraging us women to wear whatever we want, and to really start caring a whole lot less about what other people think.

In one post, Eggerue even shared how to get a saggy boobs-appropriate outfit.

“How to style saggy boobs: a tutorial step 1 – wear the damn outfit,” Eggerue wrote alongside a photo of herself wearing a deep V-neck bodysuit. “Step 2 – remember not to care.”

Preach.

#saggyboobsmatter

Needless to say, women across the globe are finding Eggerue’s post liberating and inspiring, and many have shared sharing how grateful they are for her outspokenness on the matter, and are responding by sharing photos of their own using the #saggyboobsmatter hashtag.

“If you google ‘saggy boobs,’ you immediately find searches like ‘how to fix saggy boobs’ and ‘what do men think of saggy boobs,'” said British model Joann Dherik who shared a pic.

“That’s actually really sad because it’s the most normal thing in the world. I want to encourage people to love themselves; to be confident [in] who they are and how they look, and to normalize all the things that are seen as ‘ugly.'”

Plus-size model Ximena Valentina took to Instagram too with the following message:
“So I hear there’s a new bodyposi movement going down? #saggyboobsmatter, I’m here for it.”
