How I found a blowdry that lasted for FIVE days

It's a hair miracle.

Cathy Donohue

blowdry

A blow-dry that lasted five whole days.

Through humidity, dancing, sleeping, showering, and that pesky ‘mist’ we see so much of in Ireland.

Yep, that’s right, five whole days of shiny, wavy hair without a hint of grease which to be honest, I thought was next to impossible for an unruly mane like mine.

However, it turns out it’s not and although you could say it depends on the day and all the rest of it, I’ve come to the conclusion that there are two main factors: the products used and the technique.

Products

I never listen too much to the spiel that you get at the hairdresser because of course, every salon uses different products and every business thinks their way is best.

However, with such impressive results, I had to investigate more and find out what exactly is the deal with Kevin Murphy, a brand that describes itself as ‘skin care for hair’.

The range of shampoos are sulphate and paraben free and are designed to treat the hair with every wash.

Vitamins and amino acids restore and thicken hair while protecting against split ends while antioxidants derived from Kakadu plum and lotus flower reduce breakage and repair any chemical damage. Other ingredients including mango butter and orange blossom moisturise and add weightless hydration and with regular use, hair is said to become ‘stronger and healthier’.

I’m not one to wax lyrical about products unless I see results. When I do, it’s a different story because it’s amazing to find a new range or beauty buy that actually does ‘work’ and this is one of those times.

Technique

I had this particular blow-dry done in Oslo Ranelagh, where similar to the Mespil branch, there’s a Hot Air blow-dry bar.

When asked what I wanted to achieve, I just said waves but not ‘big hair’ and left Shauna, my stylist on the day in question, to do her thing.

When she decided a boho blowout would be best, I didn’t think too much about it and simply left her to her own devices.

However, I then started to see the style taking shape throughout the process and it was a lot shinier and more manageable than my usual ‘curly blow-dry’ result.

Here’s how the five days went down.

Day 1 – Shiny waves that sat perfectly and as referenced above, I have a LOT of hair. That night involved throwing some serious shapes on the dancefloor and said blow-dry being thrown into a topknot. This *could* have been a hair disaster.

Day 2 – Woke up and it was still in relatively good shape. A quick sweep of a TangleTeezer and it was time for some exploring, beach walking meant windswept locks and still my hair was on point for dinner that evening.

Day 3 – I fully expected to wake up with a bird’s nest but not in the slightest. The waves were a little loose but still super shiny and healthy for day three of a blow-dry.

Day 4 – To be fair, I thought day four would be pushing it but looked in the mirror and not a hint of grease. Sometimes, my scalp can get irritated but this wasn’t an issue either.

Day 5 – I added in some dry shampoo for texture and scooped my hair up, making for the pretty ponytail style that can only be achieved after a visit to the hairdresser.

Had I known I would be so impressed with the long-lasting result, I would have taken a snap of my own hair but at the time, I thought it was just a regular blow-dry.
