This hair trend is about to overtake balayage and we’re obsessed

Cathy Donohue

Summer always makes us feel as though we need a hair makeover and going brighter is always a popular option for the warmer months.

Balayage, with that gorgeous graduated colour effect, is one of the biggest hair trends in recent times but now there’s a new take on it and it’s even more fab.

‘Palm painting’ is the latest hair trend and this one is a lot more wearable than rainbow hair or blorange.

The basic concept is balayage minus brushes so it’s more of a freehand technique which of course, gives an even more natural finish.

The man behind the ‘palm painting’ trend is Marcos Verissimo, colour director at Neville Hair And Beauty, and he describes it as ‘an imperfect symmetry’.

As you’ll see from Marcus’ Instagram account, the finished effect is stunning and we have a feeling this might be the biggest hair trend of the year.

Georgie Mathers, Technical Artistic Director at TONI&GUY, explained the idea behind the trend to ELLE:

“Palm Painting is a progressive play on the balayage technique, allowing colourists to be 100% free hand, melting colouring into the hair with a smoother surface of the palm, allowing the blend to be soft in result”

Here it is in action:

It’s ideal for adding some dimension to a block colour or alternatively, refreshing tired highlights but our favourite part is the fact that this is beachy, summer hair at its very best.
