‘I was orange for about ten years’: Roz Purcell does first ever makeup-free shoot

'When I look back I am scarlet for myself.'

Anna O'Rourke

We Irish gals have a special relationship with our fake tan.

We’re a pale nation by nature with that paleness ranging from having an ivory complexion to having skin that almost looks blue in certain lights.

As such, many of us are tan obsessives who will do anything to give ourselves a bit of a colour.

Roz Purcell says that she’s fallen into that category in the past.

The model and influencer said she used to prefer having a bad tan to no tan at all.

“I think I was orange for about ten years,” she said.

“I remember my mum saying your fake tan is so bad, it’s so streaky, and I actually said, ‘I’d rather be streaky than pale!’

“I had this image of what I wanted to look like and what I thought was beautiful, from what I’d seen in magazines and on TV.”

Roz has been sharing images of her first ever makeup-free shoot, published in Irish Country Magazine.

The images contrast with the filtered photos of influencers that we typically see on social media.

Going makeup-free may not seem all that radical but for the former Miss Universe contestant, it was a big step.

“In 2010” (the year she was named Miss Ireland) “big hair and loads of makeup was the look at the time,” she said.

“When I look back I am scarlet for myself, I look awful, but we all looked awful together!”

“When you asked me to do a makeup-free shoot I was like yes, amazing.

“I was all up for it but then the day before the shoot I thought to myself, ‘Oh my God, I’m actually doing a shoot for a magazine with no makeup on and I’m not allowed to do anything – I don’t even have the safety of having a big fancy blow dry’!”
