Making Up: Nine Top Beauty Tips from an International Expert

These tricks could change the way you see your makeup bag...

Rebecca McKnight

Last week Her.ie had the pleasure of meeting Stephan Ulvund Øien, Pro Make-up Artist, Colorist and Brand Ambassador for IsaDora at the brand’s Spring/Summer launch.

While we sat in the hot seat for an IsaDora makeover, we fell in love with Norwegian Stephan’s frank, funny, no BS style of delivering beauty truth-bombs.

All said, an hour later we were a little bit in love. So, we asked the lovely Stephan to share his insider’s knowledge with you. Prepare to look at that bag of tricks in a whole new light!

Stephan says:

  • Know whether your skin is ‘warm’ or ‘cold’ in tone, then always use the same temperature eye shadow  for a natural beautiful look. Using different temperature will take the focus away from your eyes, but opting for warm or cold based on your own skin will allow your shadow to blend seamlessly with the skin tone.
  • Use the same temperature on your lipstick as on your eyes. Warm eyes: coral, peach, orange or warm red. Cold eyes: Pink, mauve, purple or cool red. This will give a good dialogue between eyes and lips, creating a very approachable look even if you choose bold colours.
  • Never use a bright concealer under your eyes. Ensure it is a little darker and a yellow-peach or neutral beige.
  • Tired of your lipstick feathering? Use a transparent lip wax on clean lips. Apply lipstick, then translucent powder, then blot the lips with blotting paper or use a brush with translucent powder and brush gently over, drying up excess oil. Repeat the process 3-5 times, and you will have a lipstick look that lasts all night long.
  • Always use a waterproof black liner on the upper waterline. It gives a contrast to the whiteness of the eye, and the illusion of more feminine eyes and longer lashes. The technique is just called tightline, for its immense effect of tightening the lines around the eye, giving it a more youthful look. This is mandatory if you use eyeliner!

Stephan’s handiwork!

  • Not sure what colour to pick for highlighter? Give a soft push to your skin will take away the redness for a while and you will see a clear bright yellow colour that is perfectly suitable for you as a highlighter.
  • Over 80% of women use the wrong mascara. Never, ever again say you want volume and length when you’re looking for a mascara. Be sure the mascara is for you, by matching the amount and thickness of the product (volume) and the distance between the bristles on the brush (separation) to match the length and thickness of your own lashes. More and longer lashes means more volume and bigger distance between the bristles. And vice versa.
  • Coral is a colour that is perfectly in between warm and cold, meaning that it suits everyone.
  • Still wondering if you are warm or cold? Compare the inside of your palm to the back of your wrist. If the inside of your palm is pink and your wrist is yellow – then you are warm. If the colour is fairly the same, you are most likely cold.
