This is why you need to go home and disinfect your hairbrush immediately

EWWWWWWWW.

Cathy Donohue

When did you last give your hairbrush a good clean?

Chances are it’s not high on your list of priorities but it actually should be seeing as it’s a breeding ground for bacteria.

It makes sense really, you use your brush every day and after using mousse, gel, leave-in conditioner, salt spray and the likes, product build-up accumulates in your hairbrush.

While this residue can leave your hair dull and lacklustre, oil from your roots and dead skin cells also pile up over time and that’s when things can get out of hand.

When you actually think about it, brushing your hair with a hairbrush that hasn’t been cleaned in forever is only going to deposit the dirt and grime back right back into your hair.

Speaking to Cosmopolitan, a dermatologic surgeon Sejal Shah, M.D said:

“The buildup on your hairbrush can serve as nidus for bacteria and yeast overgrowth, so there is an infection risk”.

You can clean plastic brushes with warm water and clarifying shampoo but paddle brushes can be a little trickier as they can trap water.

In this case, it’s best to refer back to the manufacturing instructions that should have come with your purchase.
