Scientists are finally close to creating a vaccine that prevents acne.
While it’s too late for most of us, there’s hope it could prevent future generations of teens from the painful hell of persistent spots.
Researchers at the University of California have come up with a vaccine that targets the bacteria that causes the spots.
While it has yet to be tested on patients, the team hope the jab could put an end to the breakouts, which affect millions of people from their teenage years right into adulthood.
“Acne is caused, in part, by P. acnes bacteria that are with you your whole life — and we couldn’t create a vaccine for the bacteria because, in some ways, P. acnes are good for you,” Eric C. Huang, the project’s lead researcher told Allure.
“But we found an antibody to a toxic protein that P. acnes bacteria secrete on skin — the protein is associated with the inflammation that leads to acne.”
