FFS! Turns out we’ve been storing our makeup wrong this ENTIRE time

Lesson learned.

Orlaith Condon

If, like us, you keep all your makeup in a grubby bag you should have thrown out years ago – you’re in for a shock.

Storing your makeup in the wrong place can not only encourage bacteria (hello, spots!), it can also have a major impact on the shelf life of the products.

Yes, you could extend the life of your favourite mascara by months if you just put it in the right place.

Here’s where your makeup products should call home.

1. Liquid foundation

Best kept in a cool, dry place like a cupboard or the fridge – liquid foundations can start to separate if they are exposed to too much heat.

2. Powders

Keep your powder products out of the bathroom. Humidity can leave your powders saturated and make them more difficult to apply seamlessly.

3. Lipstick

Place all your favourite lippies in the fridge to help maintain their colour and texture.

4. Mascara

It’s important to keep your mascara cool but not cold. Putting it in the fridge can be a death sentence as it encourages bacteria which can cause infections.

5. Nail polish

Avoid gloopy nail polish by popping it in the fridge to get the most out of that bottle.

6. Makeup sponges

Like powders, make sure you don’t leave your makeup sponges in the bathroom. Steam can stick to them and result in mould.
